Dear Computer Associates

How to remove CA antivirus manually.

Dear Computer Associates,

Thank you for being my antivirus program.  We spent the last year together and we had our ups and downs.  I know you tried.  You stopped malicious activity on my computer from time to time.  You started every morning when I booted up.  You stayed with me till I shutdown.  I never questioned your devotion or the support you tried to provide.  I watched you get updated, all the time, just to try and be there for me.  I know you cared.

I feel that we just aren’t meant to be together.  It’s not that your a bad antivirus application, CA.  Its just that, well, your kind of a pig.  You utilize 85% of my CPU resources when your scanning.  Not to mention the physical memory you allocate to yourself.  When your just kinda hanging out, you use well over 30% sometimes.  I need my space.  I should have known something was up when it took me 10 minutes to install you.  And your always asking me stupid questions about stuff you should know.  “Do I want this or do I want to keep using that?”  Of course I do!  All my friends are using those things all the time.  Then, out of the blue, you let in viruses and stuff that NOBODY wants in their computer.  Why?  Why would you do this to me CA?  I’m not trying to be harsh, CA.  But maybe its time you lost a little weight.  You know, streamline a bit.  Get out and hang out with other antivirus software.  See what they’re doing.  You could be so much more, but unfortunetly its just not working out between us.

I know you’ve been in protection relationships with other computers, and those didn’t work out so well.  From what I know, you left without incident.  But I’ve tried to uninstall you, and you just won’t go away.  You said ‘error uninstalling the firewall (9026) or something like that.  I’ve tried uninstalling you in safemode and in normal mode.  I’ve even tried using your website removal tool, and running the supportbridge.exe application that YOU game me.  It failed.  I tried this in both safemode and normal mode.  I tried both the 2008 and the 2009 versions.  It just says ‘failed to intialize, please try again using the web page’.  I even tried subinacl and a clean boot.  You just will not go away CA.

Well I’ve decided to delete you manually.  This is what I had to do.

1.  I ran Systernals Autoruns, and disabled every single startup  entry for you.  I then rebooted to safemode.

2.  I deleted your folder and all files in C:\programfiles\

3.  I deleted all your application data from C:\docsandsettings\Allusers\applicationdata\

4.  I deleted the following dll’s and system files:

  • C:\Windows\AVShlExt.dll
  • C:\Windows\System32\ISafeIf.dll
  • C:\Windows\System32\iSafProd.dll
  • C:\Windows\System32\VetRedir.dll
  • C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\VetEBoot.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\VetEFile.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\VetFDDNT.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Vet-Filt.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\VetMonNT.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Vet-Rec.sys
  • (files provided by user bigc73542 @ www.wildersecurity.com)

5.  I then launched regedit.exe, and deleted the following:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CA

6.  I then did a ‘CTRL+F’ and looked for anything ‘computer associates’ or ‘CA’ related and deleted those entries as well.

7.  And finally, since you where still showing up in my Security Center, I stopped WMI, deleted the repository folder in C:\windows\system32\wbem\.  Then restarted WMI and rebooted.

You’re gone.  I really am sorry CA.  But it was just time to move on.  I’m sure you’ll find someone else.  Maybe an AOL user or something.  I wish you the best.
