Providing E-Commerce Solutions not Just a Website
So what is a web developer’s responsibility to an E-Commerce client? Do we choose a shopping cart platform, create the CSS, populate the database, and then send them on their way? What about the actual numbers involved with running a business? As with any retail business, choosing an electronic payment provider is important. Unlike a retail business, the e-commerce site can ONLY accept payments for products and services electronically. Ironically, I find e-commerce sites often have put little to no thought into choosing a payment processing provider for their business, when it is the only method excepted online! A website cannot accept cash or check after all. So rather than just providing a quick plug & play solution, I feel it is the web developer’s responsibility to educate their clients about online payment processing before creating a payment module.
