This is what Support.com does best! Viruses and Malware are ever changing and always a threat. even with active antivirus protection, you can still get infected. If you think you have viruses, they will troubleshoot one computer using proprietary tools, remove all viruses, spyware, malware and rootkits on the computer, repair any operating system issues (boot issues, blue screens, etc.), apply system tweaks and modifications, perform operating system critical updates, test operating system for proper functionality and diagnose any hardware problems and provide you an estimated cost for hardware repair(s) or upgrade(s) needed to provide a complete solution to your computer problems.
Viruses come in a variety of flavors and include:
- Adware and Spyware – Uwanted cookies, tracking sofware or other products installed on your computer that are used to advertise or gather information on your computer and internet usage to advertise. Often adware/spyware comes bundled with free downloads or toolbars and add-ons from 3rd party sources. Not damaging ‘usually’, but can lead to annoying popups, slow performance, and biased search results which can lead to untrusted sources, and possibly more malicious viruses.
- Trojans – Viruses that are delivered in disguise. Videos, images, or programs that may appear harmless can sometimes actually contain a trojan virus. Once opened, the virus installs itself on your computer and begins to reek havoc. This is more a delivery mechanism, and often delivers the same files to other computers on a network, or via email, website, etc.
- Rogue Viruses – Rogue security or Rogue System tools type viruses are infections that warn you of computer problems with fake alerts, fake scans, and fake warnings indicating you have computer problems or viruses. All this is an attempt to have you conduct a purchase using a credit card to ‘fix’ the problem. Unfortunately you will see no return on your investment.
- Hijackers – Malware that takes over system ACL (Access Control List) functions, changes permissions on common tasks and programs on your computer, and often shutsdown other programs including antivirus software, scanners, or other system tools required to keep your system running smoothly.
- Worms – Replicating viruses that will often leave system files in tact, hide themselves vary well, and begin to reproduce and spread causing serious system utilization problems and often difficult to remove.
- Rootkits – Deeply embedded and extremely well hidden files, often disguising themselves and attaching themselves to critical system files. Once infected, detection is very difficult. Family of rootkits include MBR (Master Boot Record), and the TDL family including TDL3 and TDL4 rootkits.
