If you’ve maintained a WordPress site long enough, which equals about a day, you are sure to have received some form of spam. It can be pretty annoying, every time you login, having a bunch of spam comments to delete. Some of the comments are simply retarded, others are in Russian or some odd foreign or alien language. Some of the WordPress spam comments are filled with links, and some of them are pretty sly, and almost seem like a real comments from real people. But usually you’ll find they are generic, pre-formatted shorts, that are never specific to your post.
So where does all this WordPress spam come from? Automated Spammers. Bots designed to crawl the web, seek out blogs, and autopost a comment with preset fields like the name, email address, site, and the comment field. If you maintain more than one WordPress site and you have them linked together, you will most likely see spam on all or most of your sites coming in waves from these specific automated spammers. So what is the best defense against Comment Spam?
WordPress has built in filters that work very well at ‘filtering’ spam and sending it to your spam folder. You can also adjust your WordPress settings to add more control over how comments are handled by WordPress. Go to Settings->Discussion, in your ControlPanel. One thing I highly recommend: Check “An Administrator must always approve a comment“, and uncheck “Comment author must have a previously approved comment“. By default, this is NOTset. I have seen spammers open a door to blogs by first posting a legitimate, well thought out, linkless comment on a page. Once this is approved, they can use the same email and name to post an unlimited amount of spam comments to your site without your approval!
Akismet is a great tool at blocking and filtering spam that works in harmony with WordPress’ built in filters. It comes pre-installed with your WordPress installation. You just need to activate it and do nothing. Simple as that. There are dozens of other Spam filtering plugins available as well. Inforats has not used or tried any, so we have no endorsements at this time. Just do some research and find out what others are saying about the plugins before installing. The best method of spam control is still just diligent monitoring.
So now for the fun part. I have seen some very inventive, sometimes funny spam comments. I have even striped the link, and allowed some of them, just for the humor factor. So I decided to showcase some of the most common and most original I have seen here. Have an awesome, weird, funny, or bizarre spam you’ve received? Share it!
