WordPress Add New Post Instructions

Login.  Click Posts ->  Add New or select a post to edit.

Adding or editing a new WordPress Post or Page is as easy as using Microsoft Word.  Within the ‘kitchen sink’ you’ll find useful tabs similar or the same as any other document editing software:  You can Bold, Italicize, line-though, create bullets, numbered lines, quotes, align your paragraphs, change font size or color, check spelling and undo changes.  Below are a few addtional features you will find useful.  If you hover the mouse over the different buttons, it will display a decription as well.

1. When you add your new page’s title, it will automatically create a URL permalink for the new post.  You’ll note that if you change the title of the document, the permalink will stay the same as the orginal title.  You can edit this as well by clicking the ‘edit’ button. 

2.  Upload/Insert images, video, music or other forms of media.  Simply click within the document and click the appropriate icon in the Upload/Insert bar.  Browse to the item you wish to upload.  Give it a name, alt desciption, size and align it and its in.

3.  Add or remove embedded text.  Simply highlight an item or text in the document, click on the link button, add the link URL, and submit.  Don’t forget to add a description.  Alt tags are important to your site’s SEO architecture.

4.  The More button inserts a more ‘break’ within your document.  This is important for reducing duplicate content through your site.  This basically puts a ‘read more’ break in the document anywhere its displayed outside of the posts own page.  Example, if you look at Inforats home page, you will see 4-5 recent posts summaries, but when you click on any one of them, it will take you to the entire content page.

5.  Toggle kitchen sink.  Does exactly what it says it does.  Allows you to view all the post features, or just a few.

6.  Certain plugins will hook themselves to your WordPress Control Panel in different ways.  Some, for example the Subscribe2 and CFormsII plugins are available within the Add/Edit post kitchen sink for easy access.  Example:

7.  Toggle between Normal or HTML mode.  Select HTML if you would like to edit the actual html on the site.  Great if you need to add tables, cut-n-paste snipets of code like java script, etc.  Or just want to tweak your document spacing etc.

You can also expand the editing area of your document by left-clicking and dragging the little button in the lower right corner down.  You can also adjust the editing area size permanently in Settings ->  Writing in the left-hand WP Control Panel. 

Once you have your document ready to go and spell checked, you can set the category and tags (right column) and Discussion ‘allow comments’ (bottom), and Publish (Big blue button in right column).  Other features such as Custom Fields will be discussed in a later, more in-depth post.
