Premium WordPress Themes
Building a WordPress website from scratch isn’t always fun. I will be the first to admit; I never start with an empty wp-content folder and start building my css, php, images, headers and menus from scratch. This website, is powered by WordPress, and the theme (template) is the Traction theme, which I am using straight out of the box, with very few customizations made. I always start with a basic template of some sort and build from there. Choosing a website template isn’t easy either, but there are a few important things you want to look for, and a few mistakes you want to avoid. Either way, starting from a template is going to save you a lot of time if you shop wisely.
It would be better if we were color blind. I would guess that 90% of templates are chosen by builders based on the colors and the stock photos used in the template. Unfortunately, sometimes the fanciest looking sites are the least functional and don’t always work the way you envisioned. You need to balance what your looking for in a site between, functionality, layout, and looks.
1. Functionality. Does it do what you want and does it actually work? Although functionality is primarily built into a website platform, the theme or template used can actually change or inhibit a sites overall functionality. So you’re gonna want to test drive it, try to break it, see if it works right.
2. Layout. How is the templates header, sidebars, footer, main content sections and all else designed. Sizes correct? Sidebar on the left or right? How many columns? How is the menu set up? Sub-menus supported? All and every aspect of your site can be customized to suit your needs, but if your going to pick a template or theme, you might as well aim for closest to the pin.
3. Colors and images. I tend to look for more basic, simple layouts that I can easily customize colors and images later. But if it looks good…. if its really what your looking for, it can be very difficult sometimes to create a similar theme from scratch, especially if the theme uses a lot of images for the borders, headers, menu bars, etc. The important thing is that the colors flow throughout the document, just as a paint swatch at your local hardware store is supposed to show colors of the same family that go together. Same applies to website colors.
In the world of WordPress, and in other web platforms for that matter, there are literally thousands of themes to choose from. Search around. One of the great things about WordPress is you can upload a multitude of design themes, and quickly and easily swap them out with the click of a button.
