Your website in the past

Ever wonder what your website looked like a long time ago?  Maybe you owned it and were just getting started, or perhaps someone else owned the domain before you.  A unique little tool called the WayBack Machine by web.archive.org allows you a look at how a URL appeared years ago.  It really is amazing to watch how technology trends impact how websites have grown.  Here are a few examples.  Click on the images for a close look:

Google’s first ‘archived’ web presence.  A true Prototype from November 1998
Google’s Beta Launch from December 1998
And today’s Google:  Besides some more inventive title graphics and the inclusion of the google account links, the site itself hasn’t changed much, but oh how the company has!  Simple is better I suppose?
MSN’s 1st ‘archived’ web presence.  Kind of looks like something my 9 year old daugher would build.  Amazing how things change.  I love the “New to the Internet?  Click here for our internet tutorial!”
MSN in March of 2000.  Looks a lot better.  We have tables, its organized and i can log in!
And todays MSN incorporating the new Bing Engine Bar.  What you really notice when looking at these sites is the incredible difference in graphics detail, especially with animated advertising and the like.
And how about our White House?  1st archived whitehouse.org in April 1996.  Typical government searchable web portal.  ironically, I think 90% of all local government websites still look like this.
The White House website in 2001.  Hey we’re making progress!  We have a picture and everything!  Haha
Wow!  Where is all this health care spending going?  I don’t know, but starting to think some of those 25 dollar hammers are going to our Flash designers working on the .gov domain!  How do i get one of those gigs?
Cern, the 1st ever website from 1991.  Now this image is the earliest available, from 1998, but the actual first ever WWW accessible URL was http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html
You can learn more about the Cern WWW project at http://info.cern.ch/
Inforats back in the Day!  Apparently we used to be internet private investigators!  Funny though how the principal behind the name still holds true, just a slightly different profession….So what was your URL years ago?
